What’s A Microgrid?
A microgrid is a local and reliable energy source, meaning it creates energy for participating buildings. It can disconnect from the grid and operate independently from it by using a local source of electricity generation, like solar panels. In an emergency, the buildings that make up the microgrid can disconnect from the grid (aka ‘island’) and prevent loss of power. A microgrid is also smart. It can respond to fluctuating energy markets, grid interruptions, and natural disasters with advanced software that manages all components to maximize community savings and safety. In short, a microgrid can be a valuable asset to a community both when the grid is operational and when there is a power outage. Our Project Goals
Cambridge is working with community members on a pilot microgrid in the Port to help provide a clean, resilient local energy source. Our goals include:
1. Community ownership of energy
2. Improved resilience
3. Renewable energy & public health benefits
4. Energy efficient buildings
5. Decarbonize heating & hot water
We’re partnering with Climable.org on this project. Climable.org is a women-run nonprofit in Cambridge, MA that works to make clean energy and the environment engaging and accessible for all.
